A study on the book of John
The book of John was written so that we might believe
The Gospel of John is distinct from the other three Gospels. The first three are often called the Synoptic Gospels because of their many similarities, but John is unique among them.
It is straightforward yet profound—so straightforward that it is frequently recommended as the starting point for those new to Christianity or exploring the faith, yet so profound that even the most learned scholars have not fully explored its depths.
The book of John invites us to have faith, urging us to acknowledge that Jesus is the Messiah and to believe in His identity. It encourages a faith that relies on Him not only for salvation but for every aspect of our lives. It calls us to embrace a life that is rich and fulfilling, attainable only through Him.
The book is rich with themes such as belief and life. It includes some of the most famous passages from Scripture, like John 3:16, as well as some of the most comforting and uplifting passages, such as Jesus' invitation for His disciples to ABIDE in Him in John 15 and the High Priestly Prayer in John 17.
In contrast to the other Gospels, John's Gospel does not start with an account of birth or baptism. Instead, its opening words transport us back to the very beginning, echoing Genesis 1.
John proclaims the beginning of a new era and a new covenant to us.
The book delves into theology in a manner that is accessible to everyone, whether young or old. It frequently highlights Jesus's fulfillment of the Old Testament and clearly states that Jesus is the Messiah and truly God incarnate.
The book urges us to believe, but not just with a mere intellectual agreement. It calls us to believe with every part of our being. It invites us to a belief that is only achievable through the Spirit's work within us. It encourages a belief that trusts God with every facet of our lives and finds our joy solely in Him. The book invites us to ABIDE in Christ and be transformed into His likeness.
This book is intended for the hungry, the seekers, the skeptics, the weary, and the broken. For every challenge we encounter, the book of John directs us to a single solution, and His name is Jesus.
There's much more to come... return tomorrow as we explore this study to discover more about Jesus. Who was He, what did He say, what did He do, and how can we incorporate His teachings into our daily lives?
